Always put your non-negotiables at the very beginning of the prompt.

3. Avoid Few-Shot Examples (Unless Necessary)

In the past, we gave AI five examples of how we wanted a blog post to look. Today, examples often trigger "pattern imitation" rather than actual reasoning. The model stops thinking about the problem and starts trying to copy your formatting.

Only use examples if you have a very specific, rigid branding format that must be followed. Otherwise, let the model reason from first principles.

The Decomposition Strategy: Managing Complexity

For a CEO, the most important takeaway is this: Do not overload your prompts.

When you ask a model to "Analyze my data, create a Q4 projection, write a memo for the board, and suggest a risk mitigation strategy" all in one go, you are asking for a cascade failure.

Instead, use Sequential Prompting:

  1. Prompt 1: Identify the key drivers in this raw data.
  2. Prompt 2: Based on those drivers, build three potential Q4 projections.
  3. Prompt 3: Create a risk analysis for the most aggressive projection.
  4. Prompt 4: Format these findings into a concise board memo.

This approach allows you to verify the output at each stage. If the model gets the "key drivers" wrong in step one, you fix it there before it spends money and time generating a flawed board memo.   • When to Continue: If the output is 90% there and you just need a refinement.
  • When to Restart: If the model fundamentally misunderstood the task. Copy your original prompt, tweak the constraints for more clarity, and start a fresh thread.
