We live in an increasingly mobile world. We are always on the go and now our devices are always with us. So much so, that roughly 57% of all internet traffic now comes from a mobile device. In another study, it showed that 48% of people start their mobile search with a search engine. This statistic alone is why it’s so important that your website is optimized for mobile. And if it’s not, you’re missing out on a lot of potential leads.

Mobile optimization can have a lot to offer beyond the user experience, like SEO benefits. (Google will favor crawling a mobile site over desktop). It doesn’t mean that you should abandon the desktop site. Research increasingly shows that users still have a multi-platform experience. For example, they can start a search on their phone and then go home and continue the search via a computer. The website experience on both ends need to be seamless. However, there’s certain things that must work on your mobile site if you want that potential 57% to come back to your website.

Bigger Buttons & Simple Menus

Clickability is a huge thing to consider when it comes to formatting your website for mobile. This means bigger buttons and simple menu layouts. For example, if your menu has multiple “trees” to get to one page, simplify it further on your mobile site. Turn it into a drop down menu so that people can navigate easily and directly. A finger is not as precise as a mouse. Keep that in mind when formatting other website functionalities for mobile.

Loading Speed

This is somewhat crucial as it can affect SEO. Your mobile website should load as quickly as your desktop site. If it loads too slow, on any page, expect a high bounce rate and a possibility of that visitor never coming back to your website.

Format Images, Video, and Text

Images have to be formatted to be smaller and load much faster compared to a desktop site. That being said, videos need to be formatted as well. Videos that remain at full size may not play or even register on some mobile devices. Make sure that you’re not using a Flash-based video as it may not be compatible on most devices.

Also, keep in mind that your text is blocked and formatted to fit the vertical view. Some people may not be too inclined to keep scrolling right or rotate their screens horizontally. Plus, not formatting either could leave your mobile site looking unorganized and possibly increase bounce rates.

There are many other key factors that play into mobile optimization, but the three things listed above are typically a good place to start. Just remember to give it the same amount of attention that you gave to your desktop site.
